On the Thursday of each week of St Kilda’s season, we take a stroll down memory lane and take a look at memorable clash in St Kilda history from the corresponding round.

The St Kilda juggernaut of 2009 had just crushed two flag hopefuls in Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs in succession before heading harbourside to take on the Swans on a Saturday night.
Sydney and the Saints had a recent history of rather forgettable, particularly once ex-Swans assistant coach Ross Lyon took over for 2007. Both teams’ close-checking styles ensured this would be another pressure-filled contest, with little space given to either side.
And so it was, with neither team able to land a killer blow, another thriller.
The Saints started the marginally stronger, with big men Nick Riewoldt, Justin Koschitzke and Ben McEvoy all having a presence up forward.
The emerging young giant McEvoy continued to impress with a running goal early, combining with Gram for a one-two and nice finish from 40 metres out.
Koschitzke was hitting packs with his trademark attack at the contest, and brought the ball to ground after a huge leap that skipper Riewoldt pounced upon and snapped a goal on his left boot. The ball needed to and did bounce very kindly in the square; it was a year where this sort of thing seemed to happen more often that not.
